The city of Rhodes is one of the biggest municipalities of all the Greek islands.
It is the financial and cultural centre of the south eastern Aegean, and successfully combines a lively present with a rich historical past.
There are many reasons why Rhodes island is the most popular resort of the Mediterranean : The natural surroundings include crystal clear beaches, many parks , (in Rhodes town) the bright sun, add to the warm hospitality of the islanders themselves
The Modern City
In the east of the modern city there is a significant portion of ancient Rhodes. This is the ancient harbour - its modern name is Mandraki - with the statue of the deer and the fawn at its entrance. Tradition tells us that this was where the famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, stood. A long mole which protects the harbour has in its middle three old windmills and at its northern ends the Fortress of St. Nicholas with the lighthouse.
In the whole of this area in front of Mandraki, as elsewhere, the Italians put up various buildings with large spaces between them. Among them is the Governor’s Residence, a building with Gothic arches all round, which stands a little to the north of the Church of the Annunciation. Today it houses the headquarters of the Prefecture. The other buildings include the Town Hall, the National Theatre and the law courts, south of the church of the Annunciation.
- Rhodes Town Hall -
Located at the centre of Rhodes town at the historical location of the port, Rhodes Town Hall is surrounded by historical buildings: the beautiful municipal theatre, majestic "Nomarhia" building and the "Evagelismos" Greek Orthodox Church. With the view of the marina and a very close to the position "Colossus", one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, is thought to was standing.
A magical location known to the entire world from ancient times!
