Protected as a UNESCO world
heritage site, with some buildings as old as 1,000 years of
age, Lindos is a jewel nestled next to an imposing rock outcrop,
towering over the natural harbor and coves, where the Acropolis
and Crusader fort are located. One of the three ancient cities
that made up Rhodes, Lindos has been inhabited for more than
3,000 years and has been a major commercial center with its
port playing a big role in the trade routes of antiquity as
well as a cultural haven, during the Middle Ages and various
occupations of the island.
- St. Paul’s Chapel, St. Paul’s Bay -
At the foot of the Acropolis is St Paul's Bay. The white chapel is dedicated to saint Paul, who landed Here in 43 AD to preach Christianity. St. Paul’s Bay is the second magnificent beach of Lindos, and a very popular wedding location because of the beautiful views of St Paul's beach and Lindos Acropolis!
- The Ancient Theatre -
This is on the southwest side of the hill, below the Temple of Athena.
The circular orchestra and the auditorium for the spectators
were hollowed out of the side of the hill.
The proedries, honorary seats around the orchestra for officials, still survive.
The auditorium has19 rows of seats below the diazoma and 7 above it.
The first three rows were also intended for officials, and low walls
at their sides separated them from the auditorium staircases.
Only five of the nine cunei have survived. The theatre held 1,800 spectators.
